NASCAR CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS HISTORY

The National Championship Points system began in 1949 as the Strickly Stock division.

In 1950, the name was changed to the Grand National Champion series and continued thru 1971.

In 1972, NASCAR took on a major series sponsor and the name was changed to the Winston Cup Championship. This continued on until 2003.

A new era began in 2004 with a new sponsor: the Nextel Cup.
